Designing a firm's coordinated manufacturing and supply decisions with short product life cycles

Article Abstract:

A study of manufacturers of products with very short life cycles was conducted to develop a model for determining the impact of cooperation between the manufacturing and supply departments on the expected profits of these departments. It sought to promote a better understanding of how and when joint coordination enhances profits, as well as how coordinated manufacturing and supply policies are designed. The findings indicate that coordination benefits manufacturers by helping them meet all the demand for products with very short life cycles, such as personal computers, consumer electronics, software packages and apparel goods. The results suggest that coordination should be considered and be integrated into production management.
