Article Abstract:

The recent trend in the number of superannuation funds in Australia closing down, with the figure falling down from 4700 eight years back to 1500 in the current year, is discussed. Excluding the self managed schemes all others are required to renew their license every two years from the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA). The various other reasons due to which the funds need to discontinue their services is also presented.

With the introduction of superannuation fund choice effective July 2005, there will be a lot of competition to grab the funds contracts. The beneficiaries will of course be the financial planners and the accountants who will be paid commissions for endorsing or recommending a particular scheme.
