Earthquake rocks western Japan; buildings collapse, fires rage; death toll expected to top 5,000

Article Abstract:

A 7.2 earthquake devastated the industrial city of Kobe, Japan, in the early morning of Jan 17, 1995. Aftershocks were quite common, and did not help efforts to put out fires or rescue people. The number of buildings that collapsed led experts to question Japan's building codes. Aid is discussed.

Sewer explosion rocks Guadalajara

Article Abstract:

Explosions in the sewer system in Guadalajara, Mexico, destroyed a 20-block section of the city, killed 190 people and injured more than 1,400 on April 22, 1992. A report by the Mexican Attorney General blamed gasoline leaks from a Pemex underground pipeline.
