Effect of Organizational Size on Conflict Frequency and Location in Hospitals

Article Abstract:

Superordinate goal approaches to conflict management can have difficulties in implementation stages. The extreme differentiation in current hospital organization can cause the integrated approach to purchasing decisions to be quite difficult. Government agencies are forcing entities in the health care delivery system to form new methodology for cost effectiveness in an effort to reduce costs in the industry. More study is needed on the structure and integrative workings under which superordinate goal approaches might flourish, particulary in large, specialist-oriented hospitals. According to a recent survey of some three hundred managers, the American Management Association (AMA) has noted intense interest in the prevention and management of intraorganizational conflict. This conflict is quite apparent in purchasing and related decision-making. Hospital size was the independent variable in this research, and ranged from less than one hundred to more than two hundred beds. Staff location of the conflict is highlighted. Administrators and purchasing managers typically have the best insight into purchasing decision conflicts. Tables of related data are included.

The Concept of Responsibility: Some Implications for Organizational Behavior and Development

Article Abstract:

Two methods of responsibility conceptualization in organizations are objective statements of worker responsibilities in formal terminology and subjective attitudes on the part of workers toward their roles in light of situations where workers have a negative value on their prior role's moral implications. Management theory, which also includes objective terms, acts in manipulation of subjective attitudes toward responsibility. Replacement of such a control theory through increasing the worker's moral awareness is assessed. While it may seem that the subjective and objective approach to attitudinal controls are opposed, they reflect two paradigms: regulatory and revelatory, but these lend themselves toward the end of morality in work, not just conformity. Organizational aspects of work can have strong moral and strategic implications. Internal definitions of responsibility should be highlighted. Theorists should be more aware of the values underlying their own concepts of responsibility.
