Engines of progress V: NEES Energy Inc., 1984-1990

Article Abstract:

NEES Energy Inc. was a subsidiary firm spun off the New England Electric System in 1984 and merged with the Northeast Energy Services in 1990. The firm, which designed and installed energy conservation systems, offers a revealing case study of corporate entrepreneurship. For instance, NEES Energy proved that new venture firms have to run under conditions highly unattractive and unprofitable for their parent firms, namely a highly uncertain market reception, very intense team effort and an autonomous management.

Article Abstract:

The deficiencies of the financial system of central and eastern European countries are analyzed and their implications for small- and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs) examined. The role of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in correcting the liquidity constraints faced by SMEs is also investigated. Analysis reveals that the EBRD prefers to reach SMEs through local financial intermediaries, emphasizes commercial approaches to finance, and aids the development of local financial systems.
