Extreme measures: in the race to build a fiber-optic switch, the winners take all; but 'Project Orange' yields some bitter fruit, too; Mr. Swanson's sacrifices; 'computers are your God.'(Product Development)

Article Abstract:

Chelmsford, MA-based Sycamore Networks Inc. is in a race to produce a fiber-optic switch. Although the company began its 'Project Orange' after competitors like Lucent Technologies and Cisco Systems had started their projects, it has taken many risks and spent only 14-months on its new switch. The switch will be able to process more than two million phone calls simultaneously but most importantly, to monitor the lines and re-route data along shortest path.
