Gold is one of Australia's most significant export industries and in the past has been a safe investment in troubled times. The price of gold rose after the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001, but for it to keep such a good price further conflict would be necessary.

Issues concerning the projected price of crude oil on international markets are discussed. Predictions of sustained prices of at least $20 a barrel and the efforts of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries to keep prices steady are examined.
