Good news from academe

Article Abstract:

James Madison University, one of 35 professional accounting schools in the U.S., has decided to emphasize the nontechnical aspects of accounting with courses in oral and written communication and the ethical aspects of the field of accounting. James Madison is regarded as a leader in the accounting educational field, with its School of Accounting and its Center for Research in Accounting Education (publisher of the Journal of Accounting Education). Similarly, the accounting faculty at the University of North Florida has decided to emphasize accounting students' training in communication by replacing tests that require the solution of accounting problems with research papers. Both schools seem to be responding to the industry-wide complaint that accounting graduates cannot write business-like reports.

In search of excellence, the marketplace, and Millard Fillmore

Article Abstract:

In Search of Excellence is a book that examines the finances of top companies. The book notes that corporate leaders do not usually come from the ranks of attorneys or lawyers. However, the accountants of General Motors, CSX Corp., and CPC International, among many other corporations, have turned in excellent performances, contrary to this belief.
