Digital commerce: Netscape's decision to give away code could alter the software industry
Article Abstract:
Netscape's decision to give away source code could profoundly affect the commercial software industry. Marc L. Andreesen, Netscape co-founder and executive vice pres for products, said competition with Microsoft left the company little choice but to give away the source code of its Communicator suite of Internet software products. Netscape has attracted 10 to 100 times more programmers since introducing the program on Jan 23, 1998, according to Andreesen. Many software insiders are blasting Netscape for making source code, a company's most valuable property, available at large on the Internet. Free software advocates say customers who buy and use software should have the right to customize it. Free software also is gaining popularity, perhaps because of its availability over the Internet. Netscape, meanwhile, will continue to charge customers for its server software.
