Hit 'Em While They're Hot
Article Abstract:
Business owners are constantly looking for new customers to replace old customers and to help the business grow, but doing the marketing research to unearth these new prospects can be expensive and time consuming, and is often beyond the scope of many small businesses. But Bob Perlstein of Atlanta has developed just the service to help these businesses target their promotions to the proper audience. His company, Dataman Information Services (DIS), provides mailing lists which covers new homeowners, those who own dogs, spend a lot of money, drive fancy cars, as well as many other specific attributes. The lists are updated daily, by researchers in thirty-four states, and clients buy the list on a yearly basis. Customers can buy single general lists, or specific integrated lists. For example, a list can be prepared of people who buy gold and silver, drive Rolls Royces, and own airplanes. The service will soon be available in all fifty states.

Customized Maternity Wear - for Rent
Article Abstract:
When Donna Smith took an early retirement from her job, she wanted to start a new career which would help keep her close to home. Her interest in dress making and tailoring led her to come up with a unique business idea. She began a maternity clothing rental business, mostly for professional women who still need to look professional even though they are pregnant. Renting costs about one half of buying, and Smith custom tailors the clothing to fit the client. A mention in Vogue magazine led to requests through the mail, which has since led to a mail order business. Smith is considering plans to expand, and to go national, and sees the company having ten million dollars in sales by the end of the 1980s.
