House passes liability suit curbs

The Common Sense Product Liability and Legal Reform Act was passed by the House on Mar 10, 1995, by a vote of 265-161. The bill sets a cap on punitive damage awards and was backed by House Republicans, businesses and physician groups. Trial lawyers and consumer groups opposed the bill.

House passes welfare reform

Article Abstract:

The House of Representatives approved a welfare bill that would allow states to use funds from five block grants instead of administering funds for federal programs and help reduce the deficit. The legislation gives states more control over how welfare funds are distributed.

House passes anticrime bills

Article Abstract:

Congress has passed the last of six anticrime proposed legislation on Feb. 14, 1995. The specific bill would allow local officials to avail of block grants of more than $10 billion in lieu of federal funding for the deployment of new police officers.
