Human resources management

Article Abstract:

The role of the personnel department is currently being scrutinized by many outsiders. Proactive management of human resources is a desirable goal. New assessment techniques for better managerial selection and development should be introduced only after careful consideration of the issues involved. Concerns about pay and benefits have triggered evaluation of ways to increase payment for performance or the ability of the compensation system to attract and retain staff. Communication through consultative committees seems to be widespread for the dissemination of information, especially about major organizational or technological change.

Human resources management

Article Abstract:

Current trends in payment systems in British industry are discussed. Performance related pay is becoming increasingly common. Individual bonuses based on piecework schemes are giving way to team-related and company-wide bonuses. New tax laws which give exemption to profit-sharing have also encouraged the growing acceptance of incentives in industry. While promising, these new incentive programs need to overcome problems of pay anomalies, administrative burdens, and employee suspicion, especially in unionized firms.
