IBM discovers Web-hacking preventative

Article Abstract:

IBM has invented a new method that allows users to send information securely over the Web. The new system has been dubbed the Cramer-Shoup cryptosystem and works by doubly encoding all information that is sent out from Web sites that use the system. Additionally, the Cramer-Shoup cryptosystem encodes the server computer's response to spurious messages that are sent to it, thus preventing the sender from learning anything from the system. IBM is expected to announced the Cramer-Shoup cryptosystem in Aug at the Crypto '98 conference at the University of Calif in Santa Barbara. The company is expected to portray the new technology as a boon to the electronic commerce industry.

Fashion coup at 'Dawson's Creek': American Eagle ousts J. Crew as TV clothier

Article Abstract:

American Eagle Outfitters Inc. will officially provide various types of trendy apparel to the WB Network's popular teenage television program "Dawson's Creek." Clothing for the TV series had previously been provided by J. Crew Group Inc. As part of the new deal, the actors from the program will be shown wearing American Eagle clothes in each episode of the series as well as in the retailer's catalogs and Web site. Some retail consultants say that the association of a product with a TV show can be more successful than traditional advertising approaches in attracting teenage consumers.
