ISO 9000 and other metastandards: principles for management practice?

Article Abstract:

Management practice is being transformed by the emergence of standards for evaluating managerial performance. These metastandards include the ISO 9000 family of quality standards, environmental management standards, recent regulations on occupational health and safety, and the COSO guidelines on financial controls. They may change management practice in a variety of ways, including legitimizing a satisficing model of the firm, giving stakeholders greater control, politicizing management principles, or hampering/facilitating organizational diversity and management innovation. These scenarios deserve further examination.
