Don Mercer, chairman of the National Office of the Information Economy, believes that the statement indicates the government's readiness to meet the challenges that the information technology revolution poses.

David Moffatt, formerly of GE Capital Australia, will take over as chief financial office of Telstra, in March 2001. Australian-born Moffatt worked for Palmer Tube Mills and GE Capital in the US before returning to GE Capital Australia, which he turned into a $6 billion company with divisions in auto leasing, mortgage insurance, and credit-card insurance.
