Import debate turns towards software

Article Abstract:

Australia's Senate may allow parallel imports of compact discs during its next session which could open the debate for parallel imports of computer software. Australia's 1968 Copyright Act does not allow the import or resale of computer software without the manufacturer's approval but this law also protected compact disc distributors. These restrictions have caused higher software prices in Australia than in other markets, such as the US.

Dollar fall cushions blow

Article Abstract:

Base metal producers are not expected to experience the worst possible outcome of the Asian economic crisis because the Australian dollar has a lower value against the US dollar. Base metal prices have fallen an average of 17% which will force producers to try to maintain sales volumes when Asian countries are decreasing demand. Some Asian countries may not be able to pay for the previous metal shipments.
