Rivals' elbows jostling Palm Pilot
Article Abstract:
Several new palmtop computers are emerging to challenge Palm Computing's influential Palm Pilot. The $399 Palm III, also from 3Com's Palm Computing division, revises previous models more than offering a new product. The PC- and Macintosh-compatible Palm III's exclusive protective screen cover opens only part way, while Palm III users can share information over an infrared port. Casio's $399 Cassiopeia E-10 and Everex's $329 Freestyle A-10 are two Windows CE-compatible products due at the end of May 1998. Cassiopeia E-10 resembles Windows 95, but some tasks may require several steps. Its Jot handwriting recognizer offers best guesses on writing, and remote E-mail is standard. Freestyle A-10 is a less expensive and less attractive alternative to the Casio E-10 but performs the same tasks. An optional pager card will notify page arrivals with a quiver and beep. More powerful Everex models cost $399 and $499.

Shakespeare never lost a manuscript to a computer crash
Article Abstract:
Learning to use a computer won't teach a child how to think or evaluate information critically. Teachers and books used in conjunction with paper and pencil do that. Today, even a very user friendly computer is still an obstacle or distraction for a child. The Web's arm-waving, look-at-me seems to want to go television one better but doesn't lend itself to thoughtful discourse either. Computers are a tool conceived to accurately perform an economy's dull repetitive tasks. Caution, lest our education system be reduced to mere rote.
