DaimlerChrysler wants to beat the odds against its success, success of international megamergers. Managers have been given one half of a stock certificate and they've been told that they'll get the other half if the merger is a success at the end of two years. The War Room was created in 1995 to house the communications wizardry to keep people in its two distant headquarters in touch. Tuesday, November 17, 1998, is to be the first day of trading as a merged company, under the symbol DCX.

BMW chairman resigns in shake-up

BMW's production chief, Joachim Milberg, has been named the Bonn-based auto maker's chairman. Bernd Pischetsrieder resigned the post and the man everyone thought would move into it, Wolfgang Reitzle, also left. Pischetsrieder was the first among car company leaders to buy a line of SUVs, the Rover, but then was not able to make it profitable. The leadership changes signal possible merger or acquisition according to industry watchers.

Daimler net rose steeply in 1st half
Article Abstract:
Daimler-Benz AG announced that its net income for the first-half of 1998 more than doubled to a record 2.01 billion marks ($1.13 billion). During the same period in 1997, the car maker's net income was 992 million marks. The 1998 results were higher than what analysts had expected. The chairman of Daimler-Benz, Juergen Schrempp, stated that the figures proved that the car maker had become an innovative, US-style firm.
