International economic outlook: the world economy in 2004

Article Abstract:

Statistics on GDP, inflation and current account from 1994 to 1996 for the Group of 7, Western Europe and selected countries in the Pacific, Latin America, African and the Middle East are presented. Forecasts of interest rates and exchange rates in major markets up to 1996 as well as long-term forecasts of economic indicators up to the year 2004 are also presented.

Particular attention is given to long term projections of the monetary and fiscal policies, interest and exchange rates, as well as energy prices. An overview of the global economy is presented. Particular attention is given to the fact that after a period of cyclical peak in 2000, the economy is going through a period of stagnation in 2001. It is emphasized that technological developments are closing the gap between countries.
