Jobless rate rose to 5.6% in March

The Labor Dept reported that the unemployment rate rose from 5.5% in Feb 1996, to 5.6% in Mar 1996, with a total of 7.5 million workers jobless. It also reported that 140,000 new nonfarm jobs were created in Mar 1996. The average workweek for the month fell to 41.4 hours.

Jobless rate rose to 5.8% in January

Article Abstract:

The Labor Dept reported that unemployment increased from 5.6% in Dec 1995, to 5.8% in Jan 1996, although some experts believe the increase is partly due to blizzards and other severe weather during the month. Total nonfarm jobs fell from 117.37 million to 117.17 million.

Article Abstract:

The Labor Dept announced that the seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate fell from 5.6% in Nov 1994, to 5.4% in Dec 1994, the lowest rate since Jul 1990. A total of 256,000 new jobs were created during the month, bringing the yearly total to around 3.5 million.
