Kanban: The Just-in-Time Japanese Inventory System

Article Abstract:

American companies suffer poor production scheduling, high inventories and long lead times. Improvements in all these areas are being made by some firms by applying Kanban. Kanban is a Japanese management concept. It focuses on keeping work inventories at a minimum. It matches inventories of finished goods with sales demand. Production is leveled through the use of better production planning and the redesign of the manufacturing process. Kanban is appropriate for repetitive manufacturing. To insure Kanban's success, early and late shipments must be prevented and suppliers must be worked with harmoniously.

Warehouses on Wheels

Article Abstract:

When Coleco Industries, Incorporated, had to fulfill the Christmas season demand for its Cabbage Patch dolls, they altered their transportation methods. Normally the dolls would have been shipped from the Far East by boat and then transported across the United States by truck. Instead, air freight was employed. The increased transportation costs increased the company's sales and profits. Shippers are employing the just-in-time inventory theory called kanban. Kanban warehousing and delivery systems can increase service, which increases market share.

Lower Inventory Costs with Two Cost-Effective Control Techniques

Article Abstract:

ABC Inventory Systems and Min-Max systems can provide effective inventory control for small firms not requiring highly sophisticated systems. ABC Inventory Systems go on the idea that the value of the inventoried item should determine the amount of time and money spent doing inventory on it. The system is explained. With the Min-Max systems, stock is ordered when it drops to a designated minimum level, with a maximum level set. This system with some variations is described.
