Labour relations and the foreign investor in the Shenzhen special economic zone of China

Article Abstract:

The main attraction of foreign investors of China's special economic zones (SEZs) is cheap labor. Most investment in China's Shenzhen SEZ is in labor-intensive light industry financed by Hong Kong-based ethnic Chinese. Foreign employers have encountered difficulties with: industrial relations with native workers due to differences in ideology, work habits, and social backgrounds. Difficulties also result because of official restrictions on the employment of labor. There are also drawbacks to foreign investment. On e drawback is that the savings of employing Shenzhen labor are minimal, costing between 80-87% of Hong Kong labor. Another drawback is that work is usually at a slow pace, and workers are not as productive as Western labor. In order to attract more foreign investment, particularly in the area of heavy industry, China must maximize the benefits of the SEZs by liberalizing the areas of contracts, recruitment of labor, and wage policy.

Available information and superstitious decision making

Article Abstract:

Two problems face managers in their decision making process: (1) they must determine the logic to be used in making their decisions; for example, economic theory, law, social good, immediate profit, or other theory; and (2) they must find information appropriate to the logic, analyze it, and make a decision. If managers reverse the process and base their decisions on available information that is then put into a logic pattern or theory, managers will be led to recognize only selected phenomena in their environment and will be in danger of behaving superstitiously. The nature of superstition, alternative logics and perceptions, and superstition in the American culture are discussed.
