Layered systems deployment
Article Abstract:
The amount of information analyzed by a company is usually restricted by the capabilities of its information systems. Since there is no way of knowing all of the demands of the marketplace, it is therefore important for business organizations to develop flexible, scalable and affordable information systems. These systems must be able to make immediate adjustments to support management as it faces both the challenges of new environments and new pressures from old environments. There are usually two ways by which companies acquire information systems. One is to buy off-the-shelf software packages, an approach that is cost-effective but may not result in the acquisition of the most appropriate system. The other approach is to develop a customized information system in-house or hire a consultant to do the job. This strategy is both costly and time consuming. A proposed middle ground is to use Complex Objects software to model and design needed applications.

Rapid ERP implementation - a contradiction?
Article Abstract:
Companies are demanding shorter and shorter timeframes for implementing enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems to keep up with the increasingly fast-paced business environment. To determine whether an ERP system solution can be implemented rapidly and to identify the pitfalls of such a project, the actual experiences of two companies that adopted the same software package but achieved very different results are examined. One of these firms approached the project with the active participation of management, the project team, outside consultants and the entire organization. In contrast, the other company undertook the initiative without any external consultants, with the software developer consulted only on an 'as-needed' basis, and with the project team consisting of employees who were expected to perform their normal corporate functions on a part-time basis. The ERP project of the first company was a success while that of the second firm was not.

Installing a new system: 11 commandments
Article Abstract:
Financial executives need to lead their organizations' efforts to replace their old information systems with new ones that are more effective and responsive to organizational needs. Such change initiatives often fail without senior management's participation in the planning process and the leadership of someone with the authority to see the project through until its completion. Technology projects also fail in the absence of structured planning, commitment to change and follow-ups after introduction. There are at least 11 steps that financial executives can take to ensure that new information systems are installed successfully. These include admitting what one does not know, formulating a plan and sticking to it, talking to competitors, examining industry-specific solutions, choosing established vendors, and conducting the necessary training and follow-up.
