Little impact is seen if Microsoft-Intuit deal fails

Article Abstract:

The US Justice Dept is attempting to block Microsoft's proposed acquisition of personal finance software vendor Intuit. Microsoft initially announced plans to acquire Intuit at a cost of $2 billion in Oct 1994, but the Justice Dept filed papers in Federal District Court in San Francisco, CA on Apr 28, 1995 to stop the merger. Attorneys for the Justice Dept are arguing that the deal could hamper competition in the software industry and cause a rise in software prices. Microsoft is the dominant player in the software industry and Intuit is the global market leader in personal finance software. Even if the merger were to be stopped, however, industry analysts believe that the market for electronic commerce is still poised for growth. A number of telecommunications companies, banks and other financial services providers are developing home banking, teleshopping and other online purchasing services.

Mac OS is better than ever

Article Abstract:

Apple's Mac OS 8.5, available as a $99 upgrade, is an elegant and innovative product that is easier to use and more reliable than Microsoft's Windows 98. Unfortunately, Apple only controls about 5 percent of the personal computer market, which means most people do not care. Moreover, Version 8.5 was written for the Power PC chip, which means it cannot be used with older 68000-series Macs. For Power PC Macintosh owners, varous Version 8.5 advantages can be identified. For example, OS 8.5 is more stable and reliable than earlier versions, and it is more Internet friendly. OS 8.5 is fast, and it comes with Sherlock, an excellent search engine. Perhaps the most compelling feature about Mac OS 8.5 is that it is not Windows, but this is also its most significant weakness. Mac OS 8.5 might be a technically superior product, but Windows 95/98 dominates the industry as a standard.
