Lone mothers, family credit and paid work
Article Abstract:
The UK government will decrease the number of hours which individuals must work to obtain family credit (FC) from 24 hours to 16 hours a week to increase the range of jobs available, living standards and the labour market. Family credit is given to families with children whose earnings are low. There were 313,000 families receiving FC during 1990, 40% of which were single parents. The study uses the Simulation Program for the Analysis of Incentives to calculate the labour supply responses of single parents and the effects the reform will have on them. It is estimated that up to 40,000 will return to work.

Should we subsidise pre-school childcare, and if so, how?
Article Abstract:
The UK has been subsidizing childcare for pre-school children since 1990, when Prime Minister John Major ordered income tax relief for employers providing childcare services for their employees' children. Child care subsidies are also supported by the country's other political parties. However, these parties are disputing what form such subsidies should take. To help remedy this problem, the different strategies for child care subsidies are evaluated.

Modelling local government budgetary choices under expenditure limitation
Article Abstract:
The UK government's insistence on increased control over local government authorities makes the analysis of local government's expenditure decisions even more urgent. However, the growing influence of previous government policies on local authorities' expenditure decisions has made it more difficult to analyze such decisions. A model of aggregate expenditure in one class of authorities is presented.
