March trade surplus rises 44%

Japan's merchandise trade surplus increased 44% between Apr 1992 and Apr 1993, according to revised figures. The surplus totaled $10.25 billion. Reports on the Nikkei stock average, the Social Democratic Party, bank loans and the budget are presented.

No one survived the May 11, 1996, ValuJet Airlines DC-9 crash in Florida. A fire inside the aircraft may have been caused by oxygen generators in the aircraft's cargo department, which could have led to the crash. The accident is being investigated.
