Merger puts spotlight on planning a succession

Frank Russell Company chose to merge with Northwestern Mutual to ensure capital acquisition and to avoid penalizing death duties. The company's primary share holders are George and Jane Russell with 60% and the staff owns the rest. The company opted for a merger after investigation various options. The company was feeling restricted by its illiquid assets and inadequate succession planning.
