Mexican accord on bank bailout starts to emerge
Article Abstract:
The Mexican Congress is working to end a debate over a controversial banking bailout that could cost as much as $65 million for taxpayers. President Ernesto Zedillo called on Congress in March 1998 to formally change bad banks debts, that were purchased by the Fobaproa government deposit-insurance fund, into public debt. The idea has led to a contentious debate over how the bailout is being dealt with. However, lawmakers are now proposing to distribute the financial burden for the bailout among creditors, banks, and the government.
