The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) imposed new requirements to improve National Australia Bank's (NAB) capital adequacy ratio to 10% of risk-weighted assets as well as to make dividend payments to shareholders. The big decisions on provisions and writedowns that the NAB has to consider in order to comply to the APRA standards are reviewed.

Australian banks are upgrading electronic funds transfer at point of sale terminals, under Europay MasterCard Visa security standard, to avoid credit-card security fraud. The viability of such upgradation, for banks' contracts with smartcard companies such as Keycorp., is discussed.
