Hewlett-Packard and Visioneer offer products that make saving, downloading, copying, editing, and printing digital photographs easier. The H-P PhotoSmart P1100 printer has slots that accept digital camera memory cards and the Visioneer OneTouch 8600 scanner allows users to digitize several kinds of photos.

New ad scanner fails to prove itself helpful or convenient to use

DigitalConvergence's CueCat plugs into a computer and reads bar codes as well as cues, which are printed by articles and ads in the print media. Then the CueCat, a hand-held cat-shapped gizmo, sends the customer to the relevant Web site. Radio Shack is so excited about advertisers making a direct connection to the Internet, it is giving CueCats away free. That company, as well as Forbes, Coca-Cola, newspapers and others are behind DigitalConvergence. The author found the product inconvenient and not useful.

Mavica camera proves the rule that simpler is frequently better

Article Abstract:

It seems that most digital cameras and equipment are too expensive, the photos aren't as detailed as a normal camera, and you can only see the photos on a computer (which is difficult to say the least). Sony has come out with two products that are simple, effective and inexpensive, the Digital Mavica FD81 (camera) and the Mavica FVP-1 Photo Printer. The camera is around $680 and the printer is about $425 and it doesn't require a PC. The plus about the whole Mavica line is that the images are stored on a floppy disc that doesn't require special hook-ups or programs to run. You can take it right out of the camera and put it directly into your computers disk drive.
