New digital cameras poised to jolt world of filmmaking
Article Abstract:
Digital filmmaking has begun its invasion of mainstream Hollywood motion pictures, as Mike Figgis and Sony Pictures shoot his new film 'Time Code 2000' with digital motion picture cameras in real time. Digital technology cuts down post-production time to four to six weeks, in contrast to the several months required when using conventional motion picture film and cameras. Although its proponents predict that it will revolutionize the film industry, digital technology has its drawbacks. Some directors dislike the flatter, blander images produced by video tape, and converting movie projection systems to digital projection would cost $100,000 per projector. Some predict that digital filmmaking will ultimately undermine the power structure of the current movie studio system. Digital equipment is becoming increasingly available, and there are may pipelines for transmitting digital images and sound to venues, without having to depend on the movie industry's production and distribution channels. Internet sites specializing in digital films are proliferating. Digital technology allows filmmakers economic freedom, physical mobility and other advantages.

F.C.C. responds to its digital-TV critics
Article Abstract:
FCC Chmn William Kennard blasted telecommunications industry opponents regarding the introduction of digital-television services, accusing them of self-promotion. The agency has drawn criticism from television programming executives and manufacturing industries executives for adopting a hands-off approach on digital broadcasts and related equipment. This policy has resulted in differences between industries as well as some severe incompatibilty problems. An example is the inability to interconnect high-definition sets and cable systems' HDTV programming, because of incomplete standards for the cable that joins the set and cable box. Some television set makers attribute this specific impasse to a lack of FCC leadership, but Kennard said most businesses solicit the agency's help only when it serves their interests. Digital television is slated to debut in Oct 1998.

Competing in the digital age
Article Abstract:
The advent of the digital age will make obsolete the existing supply chains, trade relationships and successful competitive strategies that sustain most modern businesses. Human activity in a virtual society complies with a new set of norms, values and mind maps, and exists in a new communication context, which means that the dominant thinking in the analog economy will be supplanted by different ideas about strategy and competitive advantage in the emergent digital environment. Among the most significant changes in the new reality are the creation of virtual value chains, the obsolescence of traditional intermediaries, the increase in individualization, and the transformation of the role of the customer. Companies would do well not only to adopt new technologies but also to embrace new theories about competitive advantage.
