Northpoint Communications files for Chapter 11 creditor protection

Article Abstract:

Northpoint Communications filed with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of California for Chapter 11 protection. The Internet DSL provider failed to secure the continued financing it needed when a merger with Verizon Communications Inc. collapsed. NorthPoint expected a $200 mil infusion, and when the deal fell through other financing commitments amounting to $155 mil were withdrawn. The company ran into additional revenue problems with the recent dot-com downturn, which left many of its subscribers unable to pay for NorthPoint services.

Cingular Wireless sets overhaul to offer next-generation service

Article Abstract:

Cingular Wireless is spending about $3 billion to implement a global system for mobile communications (GSM) for offering next-generation wireless services, leaving behind the TDMA, time division multiple access technology. Spring and Verizon, however use CDMA technology but GSM is picking up momentum, used by AT&T Wireless Services and VoiceStream Wireless. In more bad news for Lucent Technologies, the company is Cingular's main supplier of TDMA equipment, but Lucent cannot afford to develop GSM technology. Cingular is breaking the news with their vendors Telefon AB L.M. Ericsson, Nokia and Siemens.
