Northrop expects added job cuts amid Boeing woes

Northrop Grumman Corp, an aircraft component manufacturer, announced a reduction of its workforce of 2% in 1999. The company expects about $1 billion worth of business will be affected because of Boeing's cutbacks. The Los Angeles firm says three facilities will be reduced by 1,100 people, Dallas, Hawthorne, CA, and Perry, GA. The military contractor faces competition from larger firms and needs to cut costs in light of a failed merger with Lockheed recently.

Lockheed warplane has racked up cost overruns, Pentagon officials say
Article Abstract:
Lockheed Martin and Boeing are competing to sell the Pentagon a Joint Strike Fighter, a plane the government would spend billions on, awarding the contract to the winning design. The catch is that this fighter is supposed to be affordable and Lockheed is experiencing cost overruns already. The designs aren't due for submission until March of 2001.
