Nynex venture plans cable link for U.K., Japan; 'Flag' project has investors from Asia, Middle East; completion seen in '96
Article Abstract:
Nynex Corp is venturing on a joint project with Marubeni Corp, Dallah-Al Baraka Group and Gulf Associates Inc to build an undersea fiber-optic cable that will link the UK and Japan, called the Fiberoptic Link Around the Globe (FLAG). FLAG, which will carry telephone transmissions along fiber-optic cable under the Indian Ocean, is expected to be completed by Dec 1996. Contracts are under negotiation and construction should begin in 1994. FLAG will not be competing with existing carriers but will instead work with those carriers to provide inexpensive telephone traffic routes. Nynex has been planning the cable route since 1989 but encountered obstacles on a similar project to link New York and the UK. Antitrust regulations will not be an issue for this project. Although AT and T is not directly involved with the project, it is expected to bid on cable design and laying. Nynex has moved into international investment due to US regulations that have hampered their domestic activities.

Pacific Telesis and CCI agree to merge cellular operations in Ohio, Michigan
Article Abstract:
Cellular Communications Inc (CCI) and Pacific Telesis Group are merging their cellular radio businesses in Michigan and Ohio. This merger is the first step of Pacific Telesis's probable acquisition of CCI. The merger of operations creates the largest regional operation in the US cellular communications industry. The joint venture will cover 27,000 square miles and provide service to 15 million people. Pacific Telesis is buying five percent of CCI's stock for $39 per share as the first stage of the process. The CCI Pacific Telesis plans to acquire in the long run is a smaller version, as CCI sells off its international business, long-distance operations and Puerto Rican cellular enterprise to shareholders by mid-1991. The agreement specifies Pacific Telesis's gradual acquisition of portions of CCI stock through 1999.
