PPG's journey to ISO 9000

Article Abstract:

PPG Industries Inc's Specialty Chemicals Div began its campaign to attain the International Standards Organization's (ISO) 9000 certification in Jul 1991. The PPG division decided that of the five standards in the ISO 9000 series, the most appropriate one would be the ISO 9001, which measures conformance to quality assurance standards during the product development process. The first step undertaken was the selection of a quality project manager to coordinate all aspects of the quality initiative. The next step was the creation of 20 cross-functional Quality Action Teams (QATs) to study each of the quality system requirements specified in the ISO 9001 standard. Together, the project manager and the QATs produced a quality manual that served as a guide for the successful implementation of the project. With the full support of PPG's top management, ISO certification is expected to be achieved before 1992 ends.

Paperless payables pays off

Article Abstract:

The transition of Lord Corp. to paperless payables has resulted in many wonderful benefits for the company. The paperless payables concept allows the company to save $100,000 every year and over 4,000 person-hours of nonvalued work. The automation of its accounts payable involves the matching of purchase order information with receiving documentation to produce a voucher. The coordination of purchasing and payables into a supremely efficient procurement cycle allows each participant to obtain the most benefit from others' inputs, rewards the company with excellent and reliable suppliers, and contributes a high level of energy and savings to the profitability of the company. Most importantly, the system contributes to the continuing success of the company.
