Phone hookups by customers move into tests
Article Abstract:
Telephone companies are experimenting with a new customer-activated services technology that they hope will eliminate installation delays while keeping labor costs down. The new technology allows customers to suspend or discontinue service and cancel or add special features, including three-way calling, call waiting and call forwarding. In a U S West Inc pilot project in Bellingham, WA, a new customer activates the service by dialing up 811 on the telephone and then responding to a series of questions that are asked by the telephone company's computer. Telephone service activated in 20 minutes, as compared with the usual 2-day wait for a technician to arrive. The new technology is expected to reduce the number of clerical, sales and technical staff a telephone company employs.

Bell Atlantic Corp and U.S. West Inc have been selected by Czechoslovakia's Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications to form a joint venture and build and operate a cellular telephone network. The Czech ministry will own 51 percent of the new company and the two regional Bell companies will own 49 percent. The two regional telephone companies said they expect to spend $60 million over 10 years to develop the analog cellular network. The agreement will provide long-term opportunities for Bell Atlantic and U.S. West in servicing and upgrading Czechoslovakia's telephone system.
