Postal Electronic Commerce Services: a peace-of-mind solution for today's electronic marketplace
Article Abstract:
The US Postal Service is expanding its services by offering the Postal Electronic Commerce Services. This service will serve to protect the security and integrity of electronic correspondence and transactions involved in electronic commerce. The Postal Service is currently studying a limited prototype of the Electronic Postmark Service, which will provide a third-party verification of the time and date of the reception of an electronic mail document. In addition, it will check if a document had been changed after the Postal Service handled it, thereby ensuring its integrity. The Electronic Postmark will offer proof of the existence of a document at a particular time, facilitate detection of change in the document and demonstrate that the electronically postmarked version is longer in the hands of the originator when it was marked.

Looking back
Article Abstract:
It is always useful to set aside some time at the end of the year to reflect upon the events that have occurred in the past 12 months. Unfortunately, nobody in America seems to have time anymore to look back on the year that had passed because of the hectic pace of life in the last months, accelerated largely by commercial forces, as well as the general sense of urgency related to the nearing of the new millenium. This lack of reflection can be dangerous because it poses the risk that past mistakes will be repeated. Looking back, 1998 has been a year marked by great strides in the field of technology. In the area of the Internet alone, significant changes have occurred, including the availability of unlimited, inexpensive communication and the redefinition of the concept of space.

Article Abstract:
The US Postal Service (USPS) will introduce its Electronic Commerce Services (Postal ECS) in the middle or the latter part of 1997. This service differs from ordinary e-mail services because it will offer total security, privacy, integrity and proof of origin for every electronic information. Moreover, the USPS plans to offer services relating to return receipts, certification of sender and recipient, and archiving. Given that the USPS is the only organization allowed by law to distribute first-class mail, the Postal ECS is bound to attract more customers. The trust it engenders as an independent third-party and its ability to prevent criminal activity are other features that may prove to be an advantage for Postal ECS over ordinary electronic mail.
