Most firms practice a procyclical hiring strategy for managerial and professional personnel, hiring during business upturn period. There are several apparent advantages to this practice. This examines the cost and benefits for the opposite practice, counter-cyclical hiring. The weaknesses of procyclical hiring are analyzed. Alternative strategies are examined. A diagram illustrates counter-cyclical hiring considerations.

This is an evaluation of thirty-two theories of organizational science. Organizational science is a young, undeveloped discipline. This explores the potential usefulness of present theories in the development of the science. A table lists each theory, with some facts about each. Information about the development background of the science is given. Possible future directions are explored.
