Private bankers woo the new rich

Article Abstract:

The concept of private banking in Australia has been largely misunderstood, but the industry is maturing, as the number of wealthy Australians increase. In January 1999, Australia had 206,000 millionaires, up from 169,000 in January 1998. Private banking services have progressed beyond preferential treatment to a wide variety of services and products including investment strategies and risk management. Most private bankers transact business with those who have at least $1 million to invest, though more than $5 million is often preferred.

Immigration's 'yes' men

The Business Council of Australia (BCA) is developing long-term strategies that favor increased immigration and population as a way to keep Australia economically and socially vibrant. Population growth supporters face two hurdles: environmental concerns and stopping the decline in fertility rates. Professor Glenn Withers says further immigration can reduce unemployment by stimulating economic activity.

Business lobby groups have a small group of people who can manage them. It is not important that an individual understand the industry. The manager should have a strategy and be a good manager. The manager should also understand politics and have good analytical skills.
