Protect Internet privacy - privately

Article Abstract:

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is attempting to decide how the privacy of Internet users should be preserved, by government regulation or by self-regulation by the industry. Governmental regulations would be unobserved in most of the world, and prohibiting the free flow of information is a bad idea. Marketers can not be expected to place the concerns of consumers over their own interests, so self-regulation is not a good idea either. The FTC is considering two tools that would help consumers protect their privacy, the Open Profiling Standard (OPS) and TRUSTe. The OPS is a way for individuals or businesses to protect their privacy by choosing how much information to give to a particular Web site. TRUSTe is a licensing system that determines a merchant's practices so that users can decide if they would like to do business with that particular merchant.
