Puerto Rican labor protest disrupts travel

Article Abstract:

Union officials claimed that about a half-million workers from more than 50 labor unions had begun a 48-hour general strike in protest of the $1.875 billion sale of the Puerto Rico Telephone Co. to a consortium led by GTE Corp. Airline and cruise ship companies have cancelled some service to Puerto Rico as striking workers blocked public access to the national airport and other sites. The deal, which had been approved by the Puerto Rican government but still must be approved by the Federal Communications Commission, has led saboteurs to inflict an estimated $2.59 million worth of damage at telephone company facilities.
