It is important for family-owned businesses to know that when they take on their children as employees they should follow the same rules that apply to all employees. A child can learn much about the value of hard work if she is treated the same and expected to perform the same as all other employees.

When the employee-owned magazine The Investment Advisor was purchased by Dow Jones in early 1995, editor Barry Vinocur wishes he had made issues such earnings distribution, profit-sharing, subsequent mergers, and strategic planning part of the contract. Other tips for emerging firms are provided.

A threat to defined-benefit plans

Article Abstract:

Defined benefit plans will become unfeasible for small businesses, because of pension law changes included in GATT. Defined pension plans are the most useful to small business owners, because the plans allow owners with a late start in retirement planning to put away more money.
