Verizon may shed its rural access lines

Verizon Communications is planning a divestiture of 1.2 million rural access lines worth around $4 billion. The company is planning this move to shed noncore assets in order to focus on metropolitan areas where it can save in marketing and operating expenses.

Alltel agrees to buy Aliant for $1.4 billion

Article Abstract:

Lincoln, Nebraska's local phone company, Aliant Communications, will be acquired by Alltel Corp. for $1.4 billion in stock. Alltel, based in Little Rock, will strengthen its customer base by 290,000 cellular users, 10,000 more pager customers, and 25,000 Internet access subscribers in 22 counties of Nebraska. Likewise, Aliant expands its base to Alltel's footprint where it provides local, long-distance, wireless and Internet services.

Qwest wins U S West for $35 billion; Frontier bid is called off in pact that ends duel with Global Crossing

Article Abstract:

After a bidding war with Global Crossing Limited, Qwest Communications International Inc. is finally going to merge with U S West Inc. for a finally offering price of $35 billion. The original intent of Qwest was to acquire the company outright, but in the final negotiations the two companies agreed to merge rather than have Qwest own them outright. Each company will have equal board of directors representation, but operate under the Qwest name. Joseph P. Nacchio will be the chairman and chief executive officer of the merged company.
