A privatized workers' compensation system underwritten by licensed insurance companies may supplant the New South Wales state-run plan. The government's WorkCover system is facing a possible $1.2 billion shortfall by June 1998 due to inadequate injury prevention programs, managed care and return-to-work procedures. Other options remaining are reduced benefits and higher premiums.

Jawoyn people meet the challenge

Australia's Jawoyn Association has developed partnerships with corporations to help fund its betterment projects for Aborigines. By surrendering Aboriginal land and title rights, the group receives benefits for the Jawoyn people such as training, employment and housing. It has A$5 million in assembled assets and a 25% stake in a A$166 million ore extraction joint venture.
