Article Abstract:

Personnel selection is examined within the framework of quality symbolization, focusing on the use of the case study in the consulting sector as a tool for personnel selection. It is argued that this process produces both subjectification of management consulting staff to the consulting culture, and a rationality signaling effect to the business arena.

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra musicians' strike of 1996 is used to illustrate how institutional logic shifts direct and inform critical discourse and performance judgment. After the ASO strike, critical discourse was found to emphasize market aspects rather than aesthetic qualities.
