Rebels bomb capital, kill dozens

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka was attacked by a suicide bomber on Jan 31, 1996, killing 86 people and injuring more than 1,400. Authorities arrested two people associated with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam rebel group. The country's gold and currency reserves were unaffected by the attack.

Troops advance against rebels in Jaffna
Article Abstract:
Sri Lankan Pres Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga launched a military offensive against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam on Nov 10-11, 1995, around the rebel stronghold of Jaffna. The fighting resulted in heavy casualties and and estimated 300,000-400,000 refugees.

Tamil rebels down government planes
Article Abstract:
The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam shot down two government planes killing all 97 aboard. The incident was the worst of many that have occurred following the end of a 14-week ceasefire. Tamils have been fighting for a separate state during a 12-year civil war.
