Risky business or competitive power? Supplier involvement in Japanese product design

Article Abstract:

Japanese automakers' practice of buying design work to suppliers positively affects product design. Allowing suppliers to take a more active role in work design results in enhancement of product design. It also results in greater attention regarding design for manufacturability (DFAM). The degree of suppliers' involvement in product design greatly depends on the in-house technical skills of the supplier and the component's technological uncertainty.

The coordination structure of international collaborative technology arrangements

Article Abstract:

Firms are establishing international collaborative agreements as technological innovations progress. The collaboration is seen as an aid to developing competitiveness arising from technological advancement. A method for developingsuch a system based on coordination theory and object oriented domain analysis is evaluated. The method provides increased organizational learning which is necessary in managing technology arrangements.

Specifying the structure which integrates a firm's skills with market needs

Article Abstract:

A method for creating a structure that will enable firms to use their workers' capabilities to fill the needs of the market is presented. The model helps companies cope with technological change and at the same time, develop adaptive human resources. It is higly applicable in technology-based firms who want to improve their overall performance. Since the models are object based, they are easily comprehensible.
