Senate cuts 1995 spending: disaster relief funds included in bill

Article Abstract:

The US Senate passed a bill on Apr 6, 1995, by a vote of 99-0 that will cut federal spending on social-welfare programs for FY 1995, by $16 billion. The Senate version instituted fewer cuts than the House version did. The bill also earmarked $6.7 billion towards disaster relief.

Floods hit Western Europe: 250,000 Dutch evacuated

Article Abstract:

Flooding in Belgium, France, Germany and the Netherlands during late Jan 1995, resulted in the deaths of 40 people. The Netherlands was particularity hard-hit, with an estimated $1.8 billion in damages, and the evacuation of 250,000 citizens.

Storms, floods hit California

Article Abstract:

Heavy rains flooded California from the Oregon border to San Bernardino County, CA, during the first weeks of Jan. 1995. The floods caused the death of 11 people and approximately $735 million in damage.
