Government-funded research institute spin-off Lenovo Group Ltd. is used as a case study. Topics include its stage-wise and path-dependent progress from distribution, sales, and service functions to process and product design and manufacturing, and then to research and development. Implications for management and further research are also discussed.

Article Abstract:
A study on the method of acquisition of knowledge by Chinese software engineers is presented. The study focuses on the advice seeking relations of these engineers within and outside the project team. It also highlights the use of Internet software technology forums for sharing technical information across organizations.
