Simplification of environmental impact assessments in Mexico

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning Mexico's Environmental Impact Assessment Regulation, which became effective in May 2000, and which regulates economic activities that impact the environment, are examined. Topics include the original 1982 environmental impact statute, the types of economic activities that are controlled by the regulation, the mandatory requirement of environmental impact review for any new activity, and the relationship between federal and local governments as it applies to environmental regulation.

Downsizing under Mexican Labor law: alternatives for cost reductions

Article Abstract:

Mexican labor laws allow foreign companies alternatives to layoffs and complete plant shutdowns. Companies who can prove that there is a real need can shut down temporarily, shorten work days and event cut benefits. Trade unions should be consulted to maintain good relations with workers.

Legal issues concerning the use of employment agencies and temporary workers in Mexico are examined. Topics include employer obligations, and the manner in which joint and several liability applies to both the agency and the employer.
